A man apparently posing as a law enforcement officer tried to get a woman to pull over on Interstate 40 recently, the Graham Police Department reported.
In a social media post on Wednesday, the police department said that a woman said that recently after she left Mebane a white Kia with California plates began following her closely, swerving and trying to force her to stop. The vehicle activated flashing green lights, and the driver was described as an older white man waving a badge.
The woman did not stop, and the Kia contined toward Greensboro, police said.
Police provided tips to ensure your safety if you believe you’re being pulled over by a police officer:
Stay Calm: If you see flashing lights behind you, remain calm and acknowledge the officer by turning on your hazard lights.
Find a Safe Spot: Continue driving at a safe speed until you can pull over in a well-lit, populated area.
Verify the Officer: Legitimate police vehicles typically have blue and/or red flashing lights. Green lights are not used by law enforcement.
Call 911: If you’re unsure whether the person pulling you over is a real officer, call 911. Provide the dispatcher with your location and the vehicle description. They can confirm if it’s a legitimate stop.
Stay in Your Car: Keep your doors locked and lower your window only slightly to communicate with the officer. Ask to see their identification and badge.
Trust Your Instincts: If something doesn’t feel right, stay in your vehicle and call for help.
If you experience any similar incidents or have information about the Kia, investigators ask that you contact the Graham Police Department immediately at 336-570-6711 or Alamance County Crime Stoppers at 336-229-7100.
