A state legislative investigation of the Alamance-Burlington School System’s finances and decisions will be put on hold.
State Sen. Amy Galey, R-Alamance, announced that she agreed with ABSS Interim Superintendent Bill Harrison’s request to pause the review at least while the school system and the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education are working on their 2024-25 budget request.
“The months of chaos at ABSS clearly have taken a toll on the school system’s ability to submit a budget to the county. In recognition of that, I am happy to work with ABSS so that they can complete their budgetary obligations on time,” Galey said.
Galey announced in February that she had requested an investigation into ABSS’s capital and operations decisions by the Senate Majority Governmental Operations Committee after months of financial trouble and tense relations between the school system and the Alamance County Board of Commissioners.
Superintendent Dain Butler resigned March 4. The school board turned later that month to Harrison, a former ABSS superintendent, in hopes he could be a steadying force as the board continues to search for a long-term superintendent.
