GRADUATIONS
Carter Braxton, grandson of Bettie Braxton of Burlington and the late Isaac Braxton, has graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Ph.D. in economics. He will begin teaching in August at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Braxton received his undergraduate degree from Davidson College, and his Master’s degree from the University of Missouri. He is the son of John and Betty Braxton of Charlotte, and married to the former Rebecca Blackburn.
Marc Gutierrez, U.S. Air Force, received his Doctor of Medicine and was promoted to captain on April 1 from the Uniformed Services University of Health Science at Bethesda, Md. He also received the Esprit de Corp award. Gutierrez is the son of Joe and Colleen Gutierrez of Burlington, and graduated from Williams High School. A Copland Scholarship recipient, he graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry in 2016. He will do his internship and residency in internal medicine at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
Hannah Chen of Burlington graduated May 10 from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science in economics.
Aidan Gibson of Elon graduated in May from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science in marine biology.
Eric Hart of Burlington graduated from Ohio University with Master of Fine Arts.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Cailyn Fogleman of Burlington is among 120 recipients of Local Government Federal Credit Union scholarships. Fogleman will study at UNC-Wilmington.
Claire Cummings of Burlington has received a merit scholarship to attend Wofford College.
• Alamance Arts has awarded $500 scholarships to four Alamance County high school students:
Sydney Pereira of Western High School will be awarded The Sarah Rhyne Scholarship for the Performing Arts. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Edith Pereira of Elon, and will study music theater at Auburn University.
Margot Ward of Burlington Christian Academy will be awarded the Janet Rhyne Scholarship. She is the daughter of Bert and Mary Staton Ward of Burlington, and has been accepted to study studio art at East Carolina, Elon and Appalachian State universities.
William Whitley of The Burlington School will be awarded The Hazel Sellers Scholarship for Visual Arts. He is the son of Larry and Lisa Whitley of Burlington, and will study industrial design at N.C. State University’s School of Design.
Seth Wynn of Graham High School will be awarded The James Wilson Scholarship. He is the son of Jeremiah and Tiffany Wynn of Haw River, and will study musical theater at Mars Hill University.
• The Auxiliary of Twin Lakes Center awarded scholarships to 27 sons and daughters of employees of Twin Lakes Community in an online ceremony June 1. The Evelyn Apple/Stacy Wood Scholarship, honoring long-time Auxiliary volunteers, is awarded to employees’ children and dependent grandchildren. Individual grants are $1,300 for a full year of study. 2020 recipients, their parents and colleges, are:

• Central High School’s Class of 1963 presented its seventh annual scholarship awards to Zanyah Williams ($700) and Ayden Ring ($500), both graduates of Western Alamance High School. Williams plans to major in sociology at Spelman College. Ayden, who also received an Associate’s Degree from Alamance Community College through dual enrollment, plans to double major in psychology and chemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill. Four consolation gift cards worth $100 each were presented to Bethany Comer-Phillips and Bryce Fitts of Western Alamance High School, Haley Tapp of Southern Alamance High School, and Lauren Lloyd of Williams High School. Central High School became Graham High School in 1968. The Class of 1963 scholarship is open to any student graduating from one of the six Alamance-Burlington School System high schools.
BUSINESS BITS
State Farm Insurance has provided $10,000 to match funds raised by the Elon University Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity to sponsor the house at 1224 Apple St., Burlington. State Farm agents had been scheduled to serve on the build site, but that plan was abandoned because of the pandemic.
