The City of Burlington announced new employee benefits and an enhanced package to benefit current and future police officers during a press conference on Wednesday morning.
All city of Burlington employees will receive 6 weeks of paid parental leave and earn additional sick leave going forward, according to a press release from the city of Burlington.
The additional sick leave will be distributed to employees based on their consecutive years of service at the 8-, 15-, and 25-year milestones, according to a press release from the city of Burlington.
“We are working every day to ensure that we retain and recruitment staff Citywide, and with these new benefits, we want to show all our employees that we appreciate what they do for our citizens of Burlington," City Manager Craig Honeycutt said. "These new tools will help us be competitive in allowing us to continually provide the best services with the best staff for our citizens.”
The sworn officer benefit package will utilize $1.6 million in lapsed salary from the police department’s budget and will adjust salaries and the raised structure, according to a press release from the city of Burlington.
The city of Burlington hopes the new incentives will bring in new officers to the force and keep current officers working as well.
“While we believe this will aid in recruiting new officers to the profession and the Burlington Police Department," Chief Brian Long said. "It’s very important to us that our current officers are supported and recognized for their commitment to the department and city."
The plan, which required city approval, also includes a new wellness leave, in an effort to have a work-life balance for employees, according to a press release from the city of Burlington.
"We have high expectations for our police officers and hold them to standards that require sacrifices," Long said. "Our officers meet those expectations head-on, and we are proud to support their work."
Benefits will start immediately for around 110 current sworn officers at the department, according to a press release from the city of Burlington.
The salary for officers will now start at $55,411 and includes annual raises and a promotion system that incentivizes experience, degrees, and certifications with an opportunity for multiple career paths, according to a press release from the city of Burlington.
