ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam — Nolan Turner of Burlington, a U.S. Navy hospitalman, took part in a rescue operation June 14 in Guam.
Three hikers were reported missing in the area of the Pagat Caves. Guam fire and rescue launched a ground search party the next day and found them at noon, but they couldn’t hike out of the area because of dehydration and heat stroke.
The Coast Guard contacted Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 and requested air support, a helicopter was dispatched, and aircrewmen were lowered 70 feet to get the hikers lifted aboard. Turner cared for the hikers on the way to Naval Hospital Guam, where the rescue helicopter arrived about 7:20 p.m.
It was HSC-25’s 14th search and rescue operation in the last year and marks 18 lives saved.
