BURLINGTON — The North Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority has approved a $200,000 grant to help a stoneworking company renovate A vacant commercial building in Burlington.
Armen Stone, a startup business providing countertops to business customers, plans to invest $3 million in the 65,000-square-foot former Carolina Box Co. building at 322 Fonville St.
The renovations will cost $564,000 and will include roof repairs, office renovation, HVAC replacement, electrical and lighting upgrades, and additional interior and exterior door repairs, according to a press release from the city.
The company plans to create 33 new jobs, including supervisors, maintenance personnel, and production operators. The average wage for the positions is expected to be $52,000.
United Way celebrates 5 years downtownBURLINGTON — United Way of Alamance County is celebrating five years in downtown Burlington.
Since moving to 220 E. Front St. in 2018, it has played host to more than 750 meetings in its conference room space and welcomed more than 4,500 guests, United Way said in a press release.
It also has seen a 62% increase in clients served through its free tax preparation program, going from 217 clients served in 2018 to 572 clients for 2023.
In the past year alone, the expanded space has allowed adding a Public Benefits Navigator position that so far has reached roughly 2,424 individuals or families and a Housing Strategy position that inspired a “Housing Alamance” event to create a plan to improve housing in Alamance County, the press release said.
The free Tax Time tax preparation program will run through April 6. Appointments are still available. Adult softball registration coming upBURLINGTON — The City of Burlington is offering men, women and co-ed softball leagues. Teams may register from March 1-28. Games will begin the week of April 3. Team entry fee is $375.
Games are played in Burlington, mostly at City Park, 1333 Overbrook Road, but may also be at Fairchild Park, 827 S. Graham Hopedale Road.
Individuals who want to play but don’t have a team may email jhicks@burlingtonnc.gov and provide their contact information in case a coach has an opening.
