BURLINGTON — An employee of a fast-food restaurant is accused of skimming a customer’s debit card to put money into his own account, and police say they suspect this was not the only time he did it.
A customer who had recently driven through the drive-thru of McDonald’s at 1829 N. Church St. noticed an additional charge to the bank account and notified the restaurant’s management, who contacted the Burlington Police Department on Feb. 29, police said.
With the cooperation of McDonald’s and help from the State Bureau of Investigation, detectives identified the employee as Travis Murphy, 39, of Burlington, police said. Murphy is accused of making a charge to the customer’s card for the restaurant but also a charge to his personal account with Square, a credit and debit card reader.
On Monday, March 11, Murphy was arrested at his home in Burlington and charged with one count of identity theft and one count of obtaining property by false pretenses. His bond was set at $25,000 secure.
Detectives “strongly believe” that there are additional victims, police said. If anyone suspects that they have received multiple charges and may be the victim of identity theft, police ask that they call the Burlington Police Department’s Virtual Response Unit at 336-229-3500 to file a report.
