Phuong Tran, a resident of Burlington, won a $110,000 jackpot. He took home $79,828 after federal and state tax withholdings. Tran bought the ticket through the “Online Play” series on the Carolina Cash 5 website. The website allows people to buy tickets for just $1.
Shortly after another Burlington resident, Howard Poole won a $10 million dollar lottery prize from Colossal Cash. The win happened when Poole stopped at the Sandy Cross Mart 2 in Burlington of N.C. 49. He started off with a $20 ticket and tried his luck again with a $30 ticket. He stated “I saw the numbers matching,” and matching they were as he won the large prize.
Poole was given the option of $500,000 a year over 20 years or a lump sum payment of $6 million dollars. He took the latter. He walked away with $4,245,009 after federal and state taxes. He used the money to help his family, including buying his mother a new house. Poole expressed interest in helping his family with the money, including his brother who is fighting cancer
Cash 5 is one of four online lottery games that residents can participate in on the lottery’s website or through the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. The other games include Lucky for Life, Pick 3 or 4 game, and Keno.
The money made from games like Cash 5 and Colossal Cash goes to support education in North Carolina. On average $725 million dollars are raised per year for education, including $9.3 million dollars in 2020 for Alamance County.
