I write with deep concern about the ongoing mold problems within the Alamance-Burlington School System ("Start of school delayed because of mold," Aug. 23 on thetimesnews.com). Blame-shifting and excuses are not acceptable in the face of serious health risks and neglected maintenance.
Mold is not a mystery; it thrives in moisture-rich environments caused by leaks and water damage. Greg Hook's recent involvement since March 2023 does not explain the sudden wave of maintenance issues since July. Mold concerns do not materialize overnight, and it is disingenuous to suggest otherwise.
For years, teachers and staff have reported these problems, yet little action has been taken. It is hypocritical to claim to be a "cabinet and board of results" without showing any substantial outcome. Excuses cannot erase the years of neglect and the health hazards tied to mold exposure.
The community demands answers and action. Transparency is required to understand how these issues have persisted for so long. A clear plan must be communicated to address and rectify the problems swiftly and effectively. Students, educators and staff deserve a safe and healthy learning environment.
This is not a new issue, but its urgency has reached a breaking point. No more excuses; the community insists on accountability and concrete results.
