Tell congressmen to support READ Act

While the Burlington community has seen average household income increase, nearly 20% of it lives below the poverty line.

Poverty does not impact just the families that suffer financially, it affects us all, leading to more crime, harder accessibility to health care, worse race relations, and poor worker productivity.

Congressman Greg Murphy and Senators Thom Tillis and Ted Budd can help alleviate one of the conditions that cause poverty by co-sponsoring S. 41, the READ Act Reauthorization Act. The bill would help the 58 million children globally who do not attend school and the 260 million who do not have access to quality education. Advocating for this bill would help even more children get meals in addition to the ones that they get from school.

I was familiar with the challenges that many families face every day. I have done volunteer work for food banks for my schools and church and have gotten a sense of how much help is needed, but global poverty is a much bigger problem than I appreciated.

I hope that all Burlingtonians will support the READ Act by sending a letter to Congressman Murphy and Senators Budd and Tillis in support of the bill.
