Coronavirus complications again have altered football games for North Carolina and Wake Forest.
Positive tests and contact tracing quarantines impacting Miami’s team prompted the moving of the 12th-ranked Hurricanes’ next three games on Monday, as the Atlantic Coast Conference reshuffled six games on the back end of its season schedule, four of them involving the Tar Heels and Demon Deacons.
Now, North Carolina will meet Western Carolina in the teams’ non-conference matchup a week earlier than planned (Dec. 5), and Miami a week later than expected (Dec. 12), with the game in Miami Gardens, Fla., concluding the regular season for the Tar Heels.
North Carolina (6-2 overall, 6-2 ACC) is off this weekend with an open date on its schedule, before playing host to No. 2 Notre Dame on Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving.
Wake Forest also has had opponents and dates flipped on the schedule due to the domino effect. The Demon Deacons’ game at Louisville now has shifted to Nov. 28, one week earlier than planned, and Miami’s visit to Winston-Salem has been changed to Dec. 5, one week later than expected.
Wake Forest (4-3, 3-3) plays at Duke on Saturday. The Demon Deacons’ home game Dec. 12 against Notre Dame to end the regular season went unaffected by Monday’s reconfiguring.
Over the past weekend, Miami was without 13 players during its 25-24 survival of Virginia Tech, and after that narrow victory in Blacksburg, Va., Hurricanes coach Manny Diaz said his team had been on the brink of postponing the game against the Hokies due to the coronavirus issues.
Miami (7-1, 6-1) had been scheduled to face Georgia Tech on Saturday. Instead, the Hurricanes won’t play this weekend or next weekend.
The Hurricanes now are to meet Georgia Tech on Dec. 19, the same day as the ACC championship game in Charlotte. The league said Monday the Georgia Tech-Miami game will be played if Miami isn’t in the ACC title game, and the result doesn’t directly impact who plays in the conference championship game.
Here’s a look at the ACC’s rescheduled games in order to accommodate Miami’s coronavirus situation:
Wake Forest at Louisville (previously scheduled for Dec. 5)
Miami at Wake Forest (previously scheduled for Nov. 28)
Western Carolina at North Carolina (previously scheduled for Dec. 11)
Louisville at Boston College (previously scheduled for Nov. 27)
North Carolina at Miami (previously scheduled for Dec. 5)
Georgia Tech at Miami (previously scheduled for Nov. 21)
Note: This game will be played if Miami isn’t in the ACC championship game on Dec. 19, and if the result of the Georgia Tech-Miami game won’t directly impact the determination of which two teams are to meet in the league championship.
