CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina baseball doesn’t have third baseman Mac Horvath for Sunday’s second game of the NCAA Tournament super regionals against Arkansas due to an appendectomy.
Horvath, who hadn’t missed a start in 63 games this season, had emergency appendectomy surgery on Saturday night, hours after the Tar Heels dropped the opener in the best-of-3 series. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts during the 4-1 loss on Saturday.
UNC (42-21) needs a victory here Sunday at Boshamer Stadium to extend the series and keep its season alive. A win for Arkansas (42-19) sends the Razorbacks to the College World Series.
Game 2 was scoreless after two innings when the game entered a lightning delay.
Johnny Castagnozzi is at third base for North Carolina, a position he never has played in a college game. Castagnozzi typically appears at first base or second base.
Horvath is hitting .268 on the season with 18 home runs and 53 RBI. He’s a primary source of power for the Tar Heels, along with Vance Honeycutt (25 homers, 57 RBI) and Alberto Osuna (20 homers, 57 RBI).
Horvath’s absence has rearranged UNC’s batting order, with the star freshman Honeycutt moving up from fourth in the lineup to the second spot, where Horvath normally hits.
