A $3 million estate gift from a trustee has put Elon University over the $200 million mark in a campaign to fund student scholarships.
Vicky Hunt and husband Sam of Burlington made the $3 million estate commitment that in the future will create an endowment to support student scholarships.
“Elon has always been a priority with us,” Vicky Hunt said, “and when we give to Elon, especially through scholarships, the impact on the lives of students and on the future of the university is immediate, long-lasting and, of course, very gratifying.”
Vicky Hunt has been an Elon trustee since 1997. She is involved with charitable work in her community and has served on the boards of the N.C. Film Commission, Alamance Community College, American Red Cross, the Pet Adoption & Welfare Society and the North Carolina Zoo.
Sam Hunt is retired chair and CEO of Atlas Lighting Products and Hunt Electric Supply Co. of Burlington. He served four terms in the N.C. House 1985–1992 before becoming state transportation secretary in 1993. He was president and chair of the North Carolina Railroad 1996–2002. Interstate 85-40 from Guilford County to a mile east of Graham was named the Sam Hunt Freeway in 1997.
Elon’s LEADS campaign seeks to raise at least $250 million. More than 180 new scholarships have been created during the campaign, according to the university.
