More than 20 people have been arrested at events in Graham in the last months. Police and the Sheriff’s Office have had a significant presence at protests that have taken place since the death of George Floyd on May 25 in Minneapolis.
Several dozen protesters encircled the courthouse Sept. 26 for the “We’re Still Here” march. Graham Mayor Jerry Peterman said at the time he was happy with how that march turned out.
The “We’re Still Here” march was meant to highlight ongoing concerns about the Confederate monument and the county jail’s handling of a COVID-19 outbreak, as well as show participants’ unwillingness to let the protests die down. The Sheriff's Office arrested seven people at that event, mainly on charges of disorderly conduct, impeding traffic and resisting a public officer.
Four people had been charged the previous week with disorderly conduct, simple assault and resisting, delaying or obstructing officers. Three were charged Sept. 21 after a county commissioners’ meeting, and one was charged Sept. 23 after the announcement that no one would be charged in Breonna Taylor’s death in Louisville, Ky.
Deputies arrested four protesters, including two event organizers and speakers, at a demonstration Sept. 8 focusing on the COVID surge in the county jail. Protesters marched to the jail and gathered in the parking lot, where they weren’t allowed to be, and didn’t vacate quickly enough for deputies.
Alamance NAACP members were among four people arrested July 25. The four were standing inside barricades around the Confederate monument as part of the organization’s Call to Action speaker meeting, which took place across the street at Sesquicentennial Park, and didn’t move when deputies asked them to.
On July 11, two people were arrested at the March for Justice and Community, which gathered hundreds to march down Harden Street to Court Square. One person was charged with failure to disperse on command and disorderly conduct, and the other was charged with trespassing after police said he entered Court Square despite signs warning against entering the area.
