Testimony began Wednesday in the second-degree murder trial of Willie Clinton Mack, who is accusing of stabbing his sister's boyfriend to death.
On Feb. 5, 2016, Mack had gone to a party to celebrate his birthday along with his sister; her boyfriend, Derick Ulysses Alston; and her teenage daughter.
Mack drank at the party before the group left and proceeded to Mack's apartment, said Assistant District Attorney Jocelyn Wright during her opening statement on Wednesday.
An argument broke out once the group reached Mack's residence at the Oak Hill Apartments in Graham. During that argument, Mack reportedly grabbed a butcher knife with an 8.5-inch blade and stabbed Alston in the chest. Alston died following the altercation.

Mack doesn't dispute that he stabbed Alston. He called 911 following the stabbing and waited at the scene for law enforcement to arrive, said his attorney, David Remington, during court on Wednesday. Remington said Mack stabbed Alston to defend others, saying that Alston had threatened to kill everyone inside the home. There were children present at the time of the stabbing.
“He was very cooperative to the officers that responded and very cooperative to the detectives that came out,” Steve McGilvray, who was a captain with the Graham Police Department at the time of the shooting, said in 2016. “It’s an unfortunate situation that I think went further than anyone could have imagined. Tragic.”
Testimony in the trial will continue at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
