Two people died after a car caught fire following a vehicle pursuit on Sunday, according to information provided by the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
At around 3:30 p.m. Jan. 17, a trooper tried to stop a Nissan passenger vehicle for allegedly speeding on I-85 near mile marker 160 in Orange County.
The driver, James Jarmock Bethea, 20, of Greensboro, eluded the trooper, and a chase ensued, said First Sergeant Christopher Knox with the Highway Patrol. During the vehicle pursuit, Bethea exited the highway onto Mebane Oaks Road and turned onto East Washington Street in Mebane.
Bethea lost control and drove off the road, hitting a ditch culvert, Knox said. The vehicle caught on fire, and the passenger, Naseem Alanis Alston, 20, of Whitsett, died at the scene. Bethea later died at UNC Hospital.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
