WINSTON-SALEM — An outbreak of COVID-19 cases among the seventh-ranked Notre Dame football team has caused a postponement of Saturday's scheduled game between the Fighting Irish and host Wake Forest.
The Atlantic Coast Conference matchup, originally scheduled to be played as the Duke's Mayo Classic in Charlotte, but later moved to Winston-Salem amid coronavirus considerations, will be postponed to a later date. Both schools made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.
"(Notre Dame athletics director) Jack Swarbrick called me a short time ago to let me know of their situation,” Wake Forest athletics director John Currie said in a statement. "I know everyone involved is saddened to be unable to play this weekend, but based on the circumstances it is the right decision. We are already discussing options for rescheduling with the ACC and our future opponents, including the possibility of playing on the October 3rd weekend.”

Notre Dame (2-0 overall, 1-0 ACC) announced Tuesday afternoon seven positive COVID-19 tests of players among the 94 tests the school administered Monday. Those seven players are being isolated, and the school is working through contact tracing and quarantining protocols.
"We are obviously very disappointed that we will not be able to compete this weekend," Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said in a statement. "However, the health and safety of Wake Forest’s and Notre Dame’s student-athletes and staff is the highest priority. We will continue to work with the ACC and our administration on rescheduling options.”
The postponement, which is the fourth involving at least one ACC team this season, leaves the Demon Deacons (0-2, 0-2) with a vacancy on their schedule this Saturday.
In-state rival North Carolina is without an opponent Saturday following the cancellation of last weekend's game against Charlotte, due to coronavirus contact tracing and quarantining that depleted the 49ers team.
Games between North Carolina State and Virginia Tech, and Virginia and Virginia Tech were also postponed.
