WINSTON-SALEM — Wake Forest reshuffled its football schedule on Wednesday, moving its game against Campbell up a week, while the postponed meeting with Notre Dame has been added to the back end of the season.
The Demon Deacons' non-conference matchup against Campbell of the Football Championship Subdivision will now be played next week on Oct. 2, a Friday night. That game was originally scheduled to be played Oct. 9.
"We look forward to welcoming Coach Mike Minter and the Fighting Camels to Truist Field next week," Wake Forest athletics director John Currie said in a statement. "We are extremely appreciative of the partnership of Campbell AD Omar Banks in being able to adjust their schedule to move our game up one week. Their ability to adjust the game date is a testament to the protocols and healthy and safe atmosphere Omar, Coach Minter and their entire staff has created in Buies Creek."
No. 7 Notre Dame (2-0 overall, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) will come to Winston-Salem on Dec. 12, presumably the final week of the regular season, for a league game with the Demon Deacons (0-2, 0-2). The change follows Tuesday's decision to postpone this Saturday's scheduled meeting due to an outbreak of COVID-19 cases at Notre Dame.
"The health and safety of our student-athletes, staff and university community remains our top priority," Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said in a statement. "As I have said since the summer, this season was going to present challenges we have never experienced. As we continue to navigate this season, we need to remain flexible and I appreciate the leadership from John Currie, our administration and the ACC in giving us a pathway forward during this season."
Notre Dame paused football-related activities Tuesday after seven players tested positive for coronavirus on Monday.
Wake Forest's contest with Notre Dame was originally scheduled to be played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte as the Duke's Mayo Classic, before it was shifted to Winston-Salem amid coronavirus considerations.
It becomes the second ACC football game to be pushed to Dec. 12, joining Virginia at Virginia Tech, which was moved from Sept. 19 due to coronavirus complications.
The ACC football championship game figures to be played Dec. 19 in Charlotte.
