The football game between Duke and Wake Forest scheduled for Saturday in Durham won't be played due to coronavirus issues with the Demon Deacons, the Atlantic Coast Conference said late Tuesday night.
"The decision follows positive tests and subsequent quarantining within the Wake Forest football team," the league said in a statement.
According to information from Wake Forest, the school informed the ACC and Duke it would be unable to play Saturday's game at Wallace Wade Stadium "due to a combination of positive cases, quarantine of close contacts and injuries."
The ACC didn't specify a make-up date for the game, although a Wake Forest release said the school will work with the conference and Duke to attempt to reschedule.
"We are obviously extremely disappointed that we will be unable to play Duke this Saturday," Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said in a statement. "The opportunity to bounce back this weekend was something that our student-athletes and staff were looking forward to. However, we have and always will keep our players' safety at the forefront of our decision-making process.”
Wake Forest paused practices and team activities scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
“Our No. 1 priority is the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” Wake Forest athletics director John Currie said in a statement. “I’m so proud of how our team has faced the unprecedented challenges of 2020. We are blessed with world-class medical care and guidance thanks to Wake Forest Baptist Health and Dr. Chris Miles, and we look forward to resuming activities as soon as is appropriate.”
It marks the second ACC game to be wiped off Saturday's schedule due to coronavirus complications. On Monday, the league said 12th-ranked Miami won't play again until Dec. 5, a move that postponed the Hurricanes' matchup that had been scheduled for Saturday against Georgia Tech.
As a result of Miami's coronavirus situation, the ACC reshuffled six games, two of those involving Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons' games against Louisville and Miami were flipped on the schedule. Wake Forest will now play at Louisville on Nov. 28 and then play host to Miami on Dec. 5.
The Demon Deacons are to conclude the regular season Dec. 12 when second-ranked Notre Dame visits Winston-Salem. That game was originally scheduled for Sept. 26, but postponed due to coronavirus cases within the Fighting Irish program.
