MEBANE — Buoyed by a stout second-half defensive performance, Eastern Alamance turned the tide in the third quarter to erase a double-digit deficit and surge to a 60-56 victory against Roxboro Person in a Mid-State 3-A Conference boys’ basketball game Tuesday evening.
Hunter Douglas and Caleb Gerlach provided a third-quarter spark for the Eagles (2-1 overall, 2-1 Mid-State 3-A Conference), leading a charge that turned a 10-point deficit into a 48-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Gerlach finished with 13 points, Josh Randolph poured in a team-high 14 points and Darius Kane registered 10 points for host Eastern Alamance.
Tae Bailey’s 19 points paced the Rockets (0-3, 0-3). Ty Outlaw scored 14 points and Jasiel Bumphus supplied 10 points.
• THE BURLINGTON SCHOOL 61, HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 56: At High Point, Kuluel Mading provided 21 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots and The Burlington School completed a come-from-behind victory.
Jamarii Thomas finished with 21 points, six assists and six steals while Ryan Roberts supplied 10 points and three rebounds for the visiting Spartans (13-2), who outscored High Point Christian 26-17 in the fourth quarter.
High Point Christian dropped to 9-4, having lost four of its last five games.
At Mebane, Hali Watkins delivered a double-double effort with 13 points and 10 rebounds to help host Eastern Alamance defeat Roxboro Person 54-39 in a Mid-State 3-A Conference game.
Eastern Alamance junior guard Laila Anderson posted 24 points, four steals and a pair of assists. The 2019-20 Times-News All-Region first-team selection, who averaged 15.3 points a game last season, has scored at least 23 points in each of Eastern Alamance’s first three games this campaign.
Kyra Jones supplied 10 points, four rebounds and two steals for the Eagles (3-0, 3-0), who led 38-17 at intermission. Watkins provided four steals and three assists to go along with her double-double.
Aaliyah Jones posted 16 points and 12 rebounds and Alexzia Thompson pitched in 10 points to lead the Rockets (2-1, 2-1).
• WESTERN ALAMANCE 43, EDEN MOREHEAD 16: At Elon, Lydia Stucker poured in 21 points and host Western Alamance put together a dominant first half in a Mid-State 3-A Conference game.
Stucker scored 16 points in the first half, helping the Warriors (3-0, 3-0) build a 33-7 lead at halftime.
Alicia Valenzuela scored 10 points and Amelia Weaver pitched in with eight points for Western Alamance.
Jamea Thomas provided 10 points to pace the Panthers (0-3, 0-3).
• CLOVER GARDEN 49, BETHANY COMMUNITY SCHOOL 7: Jaclyn Faucette continued her strong start to the season, supplying 18 points, five steals and three assists for host Clover Garden in a non-conference matchup.
Through three games, Faucette is averaging 21.2 points to lead the Grizzlies (3-0).
The Wolves (0-6) have been held to single-digit points as a team in four of their games this year.
At Mt. Hermon, No. 12 seed Chapel Hill used five sets to knock off host and fifth-seed Southern Alamance in the first round of the NCHSAA Class 3-A state playoffs.
The scores were 21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-25 and 15-13.
Kelci Brooks totaled 14 kills and 17 digs, Isley Duggins delivered 23 kills and 10 digs, Alexis Shigapov notched 45 assists and Caitlyn Russell finished with 14 digs, seven kills and three aces for the Patriots (11-2).
Chapel Hill (13-2) advances to play at New Hanover in the second round of the state playoffs Thursday. The fourth-seeded Wildcats defeated No. 13 seed Harnett Central in four sets (25-9, 20-25, 25-21, 25-14) in Tuesday’s first round.
