MEBANE — Diamond McDowell supplied 26 points and eight rebounds and visiting Asheboro defeated Eastern Alamance 59-56 in the third round of the NCHSAA Class 3-A state playoffs for girls' basketball Saturday night.
In a matchup of unbeaten teams, the seventh-seeded Blue Comets (14-0) took the lead with 33 seconds remaining on a backdoor layup. The No. 3 seed Eagles (13-1) turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass and Asheboro proceeded to hit another layup.
Hali Watkins, who finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, made a shot with 12 seconds remaining to cut the Eastern Alamance deficit to one point. Asheboro completed a long inbounds pass and converted a layup to seal the game.
"I am real proud of our team and how we handled adversity this year," Eastern Alamance coach Tim Krotish said. "We went through two 14-day quarantine periods, three weather-related missed practices, 6:15 in the morning practices, and stuck together and had a great season."
Asheboro will play at Northwood in Tuesday's East Regional final.
Laila Anderson posted 16 points and three assists, and Amiyah Evans provided seven points for the Eagles.
Sion Martin finished with 19 points and five rebounds for Asheboro.
