Southern Alamance senior Mitch McClendon is the Times-News Football Player of the Week for Aug.16-22, as determined by a fan vote.
Making his debut as the Patriots starting quarterback, McClendon smoothly orchestrated a Southern Alamance offense that piled up 478 total yards in a 48-0 victory against visiting Eden Morehead.
McClendon was a perfect 3-for-3 passing for 92 yards, including a 41-yard touchdown pass to Cameron McGhee in the second quarter. He finished off the Patriots’ opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.
The Times-News hopes to put together a weekly football player of the week and athlete of the week (for sports other than football), to be voted on by the public.
Coaches and athletic directors can nominate a player for football player of the week and/or athlete of the week by sending nominations to david.kehrli@thetimesnews.com by noon Sunday. Include the player's name, year in school, accomplishments for the week and a head shot photo.
Seven high school football players from Alamance County teams opened their respective seasons with strong performances, making them candidates for the Times-News Football Player of the Week award.
Now it's time to vote on those athletes.
Take a look at each of the top performers and vote through Tuesday night. The winner will be announced Wednesday morning.
