A dog that worked with the Alamance County Sheriff's Office for nine years died on Monday after a debilitating illness, the sheriff's office announced Tuesday.
Grim, a 13-year-old Malinois-German shepherd mix, served with Sgt. Mike Apple at the sheriff's office from May 2012 until retiring in 2021, and he remained with Apple's family after retiring.
During his time with the sheriff's office, Grim participated in the seizure of 150 kilograms of cocaine, 65 kilograms of methamphetamine, five kilograms of marijuana, 180 grams of heroin, 294 firearms and $1.9 million in cash, the sheriff's office said.
Grim also helped find 18 people, whether missing people or criminal suspects, and take into custody four people wanted for arrest, the sheriff's office said.
Sheriff Terry Johnson said that Grim was one of the best dogs that has worked with the sheriff's office.
