RALEIGH — The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Commission has selected 462 award recipients for the 2024-25 academic year, including some area students.
The Teaching Fellows program is a competitive, merit-based forgivable loan program providing tuition assistance of up to $10,000 per year for qualified students committed to teaching elementary education, special education, science, technology, engineering or math in a North Carolina public school.
The following area students were among the Teaching Fellows award recipients:
- Burlington: Maisy Baker, Gabriel Castillo Calderon, Emily Menjivar, Mason Moffitt, Brette Overman and Patrice Wade.
- Elon: Luna Aldana, Lindsey Hefty, Grace Rasmussen and Nathan Rocheleau.
- Graham: Katie Graves.
- Liberty: Caroline Key.
- McLeansville: Katlyn Poole.
- Mebane: Erin Wheeley.
Award recipients may apply to attend any of the program’s 10 partner institutions: Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, Elon University, Fayetteville State University, N.C. Agricultural and Technical State University, N.C. State University, Meredith College, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, UNC at Chapel Hill and UNC at Pembroke.
The commission received a total of 640 completed applications and considered applicants’ grade-point average, leadership and experience, awards and honors, written essays and educator recommendations. Of the total, 113 awards were already announced as part of an early decision process in December.
