BURLINGTON — The city of Burlington organized a clean-up day for this Friday, April 26, for city employees to participate in litter-cleaning initiatives.
The Burlington Stormwater Division is organizing the event as a part of the Department of Transportation’s Litter Sweep Week. Staff and supervisors have worked within departments to create time for many employees to contribute to the effort throughout the day, City Manager Craig Honeycutt said.
“Our hope of holding an employee clean-up event is to show the residents of Burlington that we take the matter of litter clean-up seriously and want to challenge them all to be a part of the solution too. We are working with our city council to allocate more resources towards this effort in the upcoming budget year,” he said.
The city currently operates many programs and services aimed at controlling litter in Burlington. This newly introduced staff-led clean-up day, titled “Burlington beats litter,” is the latest, Stormwater Manager Amy Barber said.
“The public can participate in the ‘Burlington beats litter’ effort by maintaining their properties, hosting a litter clean-up event in a neighborhood or park, carrying a bag on walks and picking up trash while exercising. The Stormwater Division will support any effort by providing materials,” she said.
Residents can call the Stormwater Division at 336-222-5091 or email Amy Barber at abarber@burlingtonnc.gov to pick up litter kits if they would like to hold their own clean-up event. They can also report litter by visiting FixItBurlington.com.
