Every administration, whether Democratic or Republican, needs a loyal opposition. Without it, the prevailing party could run roughshod over virtually everything. The important operative word, though, is "loyal." That assumes that both parties want the best for the American people, socially and economically. That's what they were elected to do, but they differ in their approaches about how to accomplish that.
Unfortunately the present Democratic administration does not have loyal opposition in the Republican Party. Rather, the Republican Party has become the party of power-hungry and destructive people who have two goals: (1) Create a system where they can determine whose votes can count and whose cannot, like another dictatorship; and (2) Block much of what the administration proposes, no matter the issue.
The lowest moment in contemporary Senate history was when then-Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said his proudest event was looking then-President Barack Obama in the eye and saying that no nominee to the Supreme Court would ever be considered. He surely accomplished that.
Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee have pummeled President Biden's SCOTUS nominee, at one point calling her a liar without using the word, for fear that she will bring logic that somehow might influence one or more of the conservative six jurists to listen to the evidence rather than just vote their predetermined opinions.
When the Supreme Court has been politicized, as this one has, then so many other things become politicized as well. For instance, Roe vs. Wade, which has been established law for half a century, and which allows women to have a say about their bodies, is significantly endangered because of the last three members of the Court who were politically appointed by the Trump administration because of their stated opposition to Roe vs. Wade. There are other examples.
There is only Republican opposition, not loyal opposition, and the country is suffering from it. The Biden administration seeks to move in a bipartisan way, but the Republicans will have none of it. I am seriously concerned for our country.
