RANDLEMAN — A Guilford County man has been arrested and accused of killing a man more than a year and a half ago and hiding the body in the woods in Randolph County, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said.

Skyler Chance Kearns, 27, of Julian was charged on Thursday, April 25, with first-degree murder and concealment of death. He was being held at the Greensboro Detention Center with bond set at $1 million secured.

The charges against Kearns stem from an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Stuart Lee Carter, 52, of Julian, who was reporting missing on Sept. 23, 2022.

The day after Kearns’ arrest, detectives and the Triad Blood Hounds Group conducted a search of a wooded area on Small Road near Randleman Lake Road in Randolph County, where they found human remains, the sheriff’s office said.

The Medical Examiner’s Office, Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, and Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority Randleman Lake Warden’s Office were notified and assisted with the investigation.

The remains were removed from the scene and will be examined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the sheriff’s office said.

No other information was released.

Investigators ask that anyone with information regarding the investigation contact Detective J. Allen at 336-641-2799 or Guilford County Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
