GRAHAM — Alamance Arts, 213 S. Main St., Graham, has announced the mixed media exhibition of Frank DiMauro, titled "The XI Stations: The Passion According to Mother Nature." According to the press release from Alamance Arts, this exhibit was inspired by the Stations of the Cross, or the Way of the Cross, also known as the Way of Sorrows. It refers to a series of iconographic depictions of Jesus on the day of his crucifixion and accompanying prayers.
This exhibit, which is set to start Monday, July 12, serves as metaphor for contemplation and meditation on the rapidly deteriorating state of our natural habitats and the environment. Most of the images were captured in and around Alamance and Orange counties from 2019-2020. Each tableau serves as a symbol of the domination and mortification of our natural environment at the hands of man and technology.
Utilizing a combination of photographs and found objects, Frank’s work asks the viewer to contemplate the three dominant themes expressed by the Lakota tribe from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota:
First and foremost, humans, animals and plants are interdependent on one another to survive and thrive.
Second, to keep that interdependence successful, humans must show respect for, not dominance over, the natural world.
Finally, greed, waste and selfishness in relation to the ecosystem are the human behaviors that endanger the health of not only plant and animal populations, but ultimately of humans as well.
The opening reception is Friday, July 23, from 6-8 p.m. The public is invited to see the art and meet the artist. Gallery hours are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
