Early voting in the Alamance County May 17 primary election starts at 8 a.m. and wraps up at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14.
Here is the essential information:
Hours
- 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday (just Thursday and Friday this week, of course)
- 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 1
- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 7
- 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14
Polling places
- Graham Recreation Center, 311 College St., Graham
- Kernodle Senior Center, 1535 S. Mebane St., Burlington
Candidates
There are lots of candidates on the ballot, but just a few local races with contested primaries.
Alamance County Board of Commissioners Republican primary:
- Steve Carter, incumbent, now the longest-serving member of the board, is running for his second term
- Craig Turner, incumbent, a lawyer was appointed to the board running in his first election
- Robert Turner owner of Ace Speedway, is new to electoral politics
- Rudy Cartassi lives in Mebane and works in cryptocurrency
There is just one Democrat running this year, Anthony Pierce.
State House District 63
That is northeast Alamance County including Mebane. Three Republicans are vying for the chance to challenge incumbent first-term Democrat Rep. Ricky Hurtado.
- Ed Priola, a senior lecturer of oral communications at the University of Maryland Applied Agriculture Institute
- Stephen Ross, held the District 63 seat before Hurtado
- Peter Boykin, conservative podcaster running his own news site GoRightNews.com
U.S. Congress
The new 4th Congressional District, which includes Alamance, Orange, Durham, Granville and Person counties, plus a little piece of the northeast corner of Caswell County favors Democrats and is crowded with Democrats, including two local women.
- Ashley Ward of Mebane is an expert on climate change impacts at Duke University
- Crystal Cavalier of Mebane is an environmental activist
- Richard L. Watkins of Durham is a microbiologist specializing in virology
- Stephen J. Valentine is a lawyer and director of the N.C. Central University Veterans Law Clinic
- Nida Allam is a Durham County Commissioner
- Valerie P. Foushee of Hillsborough currently Represents District 23 in the State House
- Matt Grooms of Butner
- Clay Aiken of Raleigh and American Idol fame
And two Republicans
- Courtney Geels of Hillsborough is a nurse
- Robert Thomas also of Hillsborough
