The N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund has awarded Alamance County $470,000 for the Cane Creek Mountains Natural Area.
The County Recreation and Parks Department plans to build an observation tower, trailhead, hiking trails and camping facilities at the yet-to-be-opened park.
The department has had a plan for more than 10 years to get about 1,000 acres for a park with 10 to 15 miles of trails, and an observation tower on the highest peak east of Greensboro — 987 feet — from which Greensboro will be visible on a clear day surrounded by old-growth forest.
The department bought a third tract in the area last year, bringing the total acreage of the planned park to about 620.
This would be one of the largest county parks in North Carolina and a potential draw for visitors, like Cedarock Park and Shallow Ford Natural Area, which had more than 150,000 visitors last year, according to the department.
