When Sybil Wilson let her dogs out Tuesday morning, they scented something that crossed their yard earlier, which is not surprising – lots of wildlife crosses the neighboring Alamance Country Club golf course – but bears are unusual in Burlington.
Burlington police reported on social media that a large black bear had been seen in the area of Saddle Club Road and Pineway Drive the morning of Tuesday, June 14. North Carolina Wildlife is aware of it, according to police, and said to stay away from the bear, don’t try to pressure it to move on, don’t feed it and keep pets inside.

Wilson checked the video camera on her back deck when she heard about the bear later in the morning and got a pretty good shot of it when it crossed her yard at 5:59 a.m.
“I thought it was hilarious it was out there,” she said, “and I’m glad my dogs were inside.”
Wilson said there are foxes, hawks and lots of other wildlife wandering on and off the golf course. The people in the area are good about circulating information about animals moving around the neighborhood. It helps parents and pet owners keep everyone out of harm’s way.
“And sometimes it’s fun to watch them,” Wilson said.
The bear passes by a 3-foot fence in the video, Wilson said, giving some scale. She and her neighbors aren’t experts, but it looked pretty big to them.
Police had no updates on bear sightings Tuesday afternoon.
