A man who grew up in Alamance County is the new lead reporter for The Times-News.
Robby Nelms, 44, was born and raised in Burlington and graduated from Williams High School.
Nelms' name has appeared in The Times-News before – he was on the track team in high school, and in 1994 he received his Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts.
After graduating from the Johnson and Wales University culinary school in 2002, Nelms received a bachelor's degree in 2005 from UNC Wilmington.
After working as a reporter at the Asheville Citizen-Times and twice for the StarNews in Wilmington, Nelms returned to Burlington in 2013 and gained a new appreciation for his home community.
"Once I came back, I realized it was a really good place to live," he said. "I enjoyed the people and the community and getting to know them."
Before moving back here, his memories of growing up were dominated by sports and school.
"Basically my whole life was running and schools," he said.
He said he hopes that his stories will reflect his experiences and help Alamance County residents learn more about some of their neighbors.
