A Burlington woman has been charged in a fire that killed an 89-year-old man last month.
Twaina Marie Young, 55, of 1711 Whitsett St. is charged with Involuntary manslaughter and was held in lieu of $5,000 bail. Young “started the fire while smoking within the residence in a careless manner,” police said.
J.B. Newman, another resident of the apartment, died in the fire.
Firefighters were called to 1711 Whitsett St. at 7:30 a.m. April 17 to find the apartment in flames. Firefighters were told one person was still inside, and after a search found a wheelchair-bound elderly man and rescued him from the burning apartment. Fire and EMS personnel pronounced him dead on scene.
Damage was limited to one apartment unit but “substantial to the structure,” the Fire Department said.
