The Alamance County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a 1998 homicide “cold case” and is seeking the public’s help.
Larry Gray Knighten, 40, was fatally shot at his home on Mount Willen Road in southeastern Alamance County about 11 p.m. on Dec. 4, 1998.
The sheriff’s office did not release any other information in its announcement, but in 1998 officials said that more than one person came to the front door of Knighten’s house, and he opened the door for them. Knighten then was shot twice in the leg and hit over head with a blunt object.
The gunshot wounds were listed as the official cause of death.
Knighten’s wife, Rebecca, was home at the time and ran to a neighbor’s house to call for help, officials said at the time.
Investigators found a phone beside Knighten’s body with the cord pulled from the wall, but they did not know whether the line snapped during a struggle or it was intentionally pulled from the wall.
Investigators said in December 1998 that some local residents were being investigated as possible suspects, but no arrests were made.
Detectives are asking that anyone with information about the shooting call the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office or Alamance County Crime Stoppers and help bring closure to Knighten’s family.
