RALEIGH — A Graham man has won $1 million from the state lottery after buying scratch-off tickets in Haw River.
Stephen Howell bought a few $10 scratch-off tickets at the Fairway One Stop on East Main Street in Haw River, and won the $1,000,000 Red Hot Millions top prize.
He scratched off the ticket later that day in his living room and showed it to his mother. “I handed her the ticket,” he said, “and she said, ‘You won a million dollars!’”
Howell’s family “have decided that they’d like a cut of it,” he joked. “Now whether or not they get it is a different matter.”
Howell claimed his prize Tuesday, May 12, at lottery headquarters in Raleigh, choosing a lump sum of $600,000, which after federal and state taxes came to $424,503.
“I’ve never really thought about what I would do if I won,” said Howell. “I saved that for when the time came.”
Now that it’s come, Howell said, he is considering buying a new car for himself. “Everyone’s picked out cars for me,” he said.
