BURLINGTON — The National Association of Letter Carriers will conduct its annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday, May 11.
According to the United Way of Alamance County, 32,677 pounds of food were collected last year in the area through the food drive.
As the country’s largest single-day food drive, Stamp Out Hunger provides residents with an easy way to donate food to those in need. Customers simply leave their donation of non-perishable food items next to their mailbox before the delivery of the mail on Saturday, May 11. Canned goods like soup, vegetables, meats and fish, as well as pasta, rice and cereal, will be accepted.
Letter carriers will collect these donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes. The food will be distributed to local food banks, pantries, shelters and churches.
The United Way of Alamance County will host a kick-off event on Wednesday, May 1, at the Burlington Post Office, where food pantries will thank the drivers and create excitement for the Stamp Out Hunger event.
In Alamance County alone, 18.3% of children are living in poverty and 13.7% of the overall population is food insecure.
