North Carolina has the nation’s second-highest unemployment increase, according to an analysis by personal finance website WalletHub.
The states’ average increase during the COVID-19 crisis is 2,002 percent, but North Carolina’s claims are up:
4,771 percent from the first week of the year to 170,881 the week of March 23, from 3,508 to 170,881, the third-highest in the United States; and
6,065 percent from the week of March 25, 2019, to the week of March 23 this year, from 2,772 to 170,881, the fourth-highest in the United States.
Louisiana had the greatest increase: 5,800 percent since the first of the year, and 5,772 percent over last year. Oregon had the least: 533 percent since the first of the year, and 920 percent over last year.
Among surrounding states:
Virginia was No. 6 with increases of 3,479 percent since the first of the year, and 5,334 percent over last year;
South Carolina was No. 36 with increases of 768 percent since the first of the year, and 3,487 percent over last year; and
Tennessee was No. 11 with increases of 2,964 percent since the first of the year, and 3,703 percent over last year.
