BURLINGTON — A woman with more than 20 years of academic and administrative leadership began work this month in a key leadership position with Elon University.
Rebecca Kohn, a scholar and researcher in the field of biology, became the university’s provost and vice president of academic affairs on Jan. 2. She succeeds Aswani Volety, who was named chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington last May.
As provost Kohn will manage internal administrative operations of the university, act in the absence of the president and provide leadership and direction for the faculty, and she will be key to achieving the goals of the university’s Boldly Elon strategic plan, President Connie Ledoux Book said.
“Throughout her career, Dr. Kohn has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in teaching, student success and innovation in higher education,” Book said. “Her vision and commitment to students and faculty will help propel Elon forward in the years ahead.”
Kohn said her new role is an extension of work she has been doing for years.
“The work I have prioritized throughout my career on developing innovative programs and enhancing the experiences of students, faculty members, and staff members resonates with the initiatives that Elon University is pursuing through Boldly Elon,” she said.
Previously Kohn had been senior vice provost and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania. She joined Arcadia in 2017 as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Kohn holds a doctorate in biology from Johns Hopkins University, where she explored transcriptional regulation, and a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Dartmouth College.
Before joining Arcadia College, Kohn spent 18 years on the biology faculty at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.
Book announced Kohn’s selection on Nov. 3 after receiving recommendations from a 23-member search committee.
