Nearly all of us know someone we can turn to in times of need.
You know them or others like them; someone who mows the overgrown lawn of an infirmed neighbor, or regularly volunteers at a food bank, or works behind the scenes for the betterment of entire communities.
These are the unsung heroes who live in our towns; people we call friends and neighbors. These are our newsmakers, which also is the name of this inaugural series.
This week, in the spirit of the holidays, The Times-News will give attention to some of these neighbors for their contributions to our communities.
In this first year of our Newsmaker series, we'll profile a World War II veteran from Burlington who at 99 years old still sings with a Black male chorus. We'll also profile a man who was instrumental in the revitalization of downtown Gibsonville.
We'll highlight a couple who help feed and clothe the homeless in Burlington and a local pastor and business owner also works to help feed those in need. Readers can expect to learn about a woman working to make vaccinations available to those in her east Burlington neighborhood.
In our inaugural Newsmaker article running with this introduction, read about a veteran who not only provides the homeless of Alamance County a place to shelter, but also helps them find a path toward work and homes of their own.
