BURLINGTON — Norma Mitchell Loy, 99, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 19, 2024 at the Hospice Home surrounded by her family. She was born on August 2, 1924 in Rockingham County to the late William McKinley Mitchell and Katherine Lelia Hall Mitchell. Norma was the wife of 55 years to the late Kemp McKinley Loy, Sr. who died in 1996.

She retired from textiles and had formerly worked at J. Spencer Love as a secretary. Norma was a life member of Friendship Church where she was one of the oldest members there. In the past, she was on several committees at the church like the church historian, cooking for families and visiting the shut-ins. Norma enjoyed volunteering so much that she received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Governor’s office in 1996. She received her pilot license in 1943 and was the first women to fly solo at the Alamance Airport. Norma enjoyed shopping, canning, planting a garden and cooking for others, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
