BURLINGTON — Norma Mitchell Loy, 99, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 19, 2024 at the Hospice Home surrounded by her family. She was born on August 2, 1924 in Rockingham County to the late William McKinley Mitchell and Katherine Lelia Hall Mitchell. Norma was the wife of 55 years to the late Kemp McKinley Loy, Sr. who died in 1996.
She retired from textiles and had formerly worked at J. Spencer Love as a secretary. Norma was a life member of Friendship Church where she was one of the oldest members there. In the past, she was on several committees at the church like the church historian, cooking for families and visiting the shut-ins. Norma enjoyed volunteering so much that she received the Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Governor’s office in 1996. She received her pilot license in 1943 and was the first women to fly solo at the Alamance Airport. Norma enjoyed shopping, canning, planting a garden and cooking for others, but most of all she loved spending time with her family.
Norma is survived by her children, Karen Bullard, Susan Loy, and Lisa Wright and husband Dickie; grandchildren, Paul Loy and wife Bobbie, Amy Whitfield and husband Lonnie, and Jason Pope; seven great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren; a brother, William “Bill” McKinley Mitchell Jr.; several nieces and nephews; and her extended family, Kim Vincent. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Kemp “Kenny” Loy, Jr.; a grandson, Kirk Vincent; and her siblings, Jessie Mitchell, Alma Mitchell and Doris Smith.
The funeral service to celebrate Norma’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2024 at Friendship Church by Rev. Mike Kelly and Rev. Al Horne with the burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00pm to 2:45pm Thursday at the church prior to the service.
