TORONTO — A third-period collapse saw the wheels fall completely off and left the Carolina Hurricanes down to their final one.
The Boston Bruins scored four goals in 6:51 span and completed a come-from-behind 4-3 victory against the Hurricanes on Monday night in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs first-round series.
Boston leads the series 3-1 heading into Wednesday afternoon’s Game 5, where the Hurricanes face elimination from the NHL Playoffs.
Jake DeBrusk scored twice while Connor Clifton and Brad Marchand added a goal apiece as the ice quickly tilted in the Bruins' favor inside of the Eastern Conference bubble at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena.
The Hurricanes held a 2-0 lead until 7 1/2 minutes into the third period when Carolina goaltender James Reimer left the comfort of his crease to track down a puck sliding toward the net. DeBrusk beat Reimer in a race to the puck and shot it into a yawning net, beginning a Hurricanes spiral.
Clifton scored to tie the game, then, 90 seconds later, Marchand was left unmarked in front of Reimer to score and give the Bruins a 3-2 lead.
DeBrusk notched his second goal with 5:43 remaining as the Bruins built a 16-0 advantage in third-period shots.
The Hurricanes played without winger Andrei Svechnikov, who left Saturday’s Game 4 with a right leg injury and underwent an MRI on Sunday. Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said Svechnikov is doubtful to return in the playoffs.
Teuvo Teravainen scored on the Hurricanes' first shot of the third period with 87 seconds left in the game. It was the second time Carolina scored on its first shot of a period Monday night.
Justin Williams released a wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle to put Carolina in front 1-0 midway through the first period.
Carolina captain Jordan Staal left the ice for the dressing room after receiving a hit from Charlie McAvoy in the third period. He did not return and his status moving forward was not immediately known.
Netminder Jaroslav Halak made 16 saves on 19 shots in his second game since Bruins No. 1 goalie Tuukka Rask opted out of the NHL’s return to play Saturday morning.
Reimer, who was in net for Carolina when it won Game 2 on Thursday, made 29 saves. Petr Mrazek occupied the nets in Games 1 and 3.
