TOWSON, Md. — Elon picked up another road victory on Saturday and moved into position to secure a winning season.
Davis Cheek threw for 251 yards as the visiting Phoenix defeated Towson 37-14 in Colonial Athletic Association football at Unitas Stadium.
Kortez Weeks hauled in six catches for 124 yards and a touchdown, and Jaylan Thomas and McKinley Witherspoon combined on three rushing scores for Elon, which never trailed while building leads of 13-0 and 27-7.
The Phoenix (5-5 overall, 4-3 CAA) plays host to Rhode Island in next week’s final regular-season game with the chance to clinch a winning record. Elon sits in a three-way tie for third place with Rhode Island and William & Mary in the CAA standings, two games behind league leaders James Madison and Villanova.
Four of Elon’s five victories this season have come on the road, with three of those wins posted in conference games.
Elon kicker Skyler Davis connected on three field goals Saturday, two of them long-distance makes of 52 yards and 50 yards. His 52-yarder, a career-long for the fourth-year junior, put Elon ahead 13-0 early in the second quarter.
Vincent Amendola, the former North Carolina backup quarterback from Leesville Road High School in Raleigh, threw for a touchdown and ran for a score for Towson (4-6, 3-4), which got 126 rushing yards from Jerry Howard Jr. the Georgia Tech transfer.
Witherspoon’s second 1-yard touchdown of the game gave the Phoenix a 20-7 lead by halftime. Later, Thomas’s 14-yard touchdown run to open the fourth quarter capped the scoring and sealed the outcome. Thomas ran for 58 yards on 14 carries.
Cheek, the senior standout who leads the CAA in passing yards, finished 16 of 27. He hooked up with Weeks for a 27-yard score in the third quarter, marking the 50th passing touchdown of Cheek’s college career.
Less than three minutes of game time later, Amendola’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Jabari Allen pulled Towson within 27-14. Elon responded with Davis’s 50-yard field goal and Thomas’s touchdown run.
Amendola, the Tigers quarterback, went just 10 of 24 passing on the day. Defensive back Cole Coleman and linebacker Devonte Chandler topped Elon’s defense with eight tackles a piece. Chandler had a sack and three quarterback hurries.
