MT. HERMON — Two area high school freshmen finished in first place of a Mid-Piedmont Conference boys' and girls' cross country meet Wednesday at Southern Alamance.
Walker East of Williams High School won the boys' race with a time of 19 minutes, 33.34 seconds while Savannah Strickland of Southern Alamance placed first in the girls' race (23:47.24).
East edged out Southern Alamance's Daniel King (19:34.27) by less than a second in boys' competition. TJ Thorpe (19:57.68) and Dylan Sowles (20:38.04), both from Williams, finished in third and fourth, respectively. Southern's Adam Joins (20:42.18) was fifth and Eastern Guilford's Noah Howe (21:04.92) came in sixth.
The Patriots won the boys' team competition with 32 points, followed by Williams (37) and Eastern Guilford (53).
In girls' competition, Sarah Graham (24:09.81), Ana Soto (24:11.15) and Hannah Graham (24:11.47) from Southern Alamance finished second through fourth. Lilly Clemmons of Williams (24:44.38) was fifth. Eastern Guilford's top finisher, Jordyn Anderson (28:09.49, claimed ninth.
Southern Alamance's 18 points claimed the girls' team victory. Williams was the runner-up with 38 points and Eastern Guilford was a non-scoring team.
