CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina baseball’s remarkable turnaround has taken the Tar Heels from teetering on the NCAA Tournament bubble to two wins away from the College World Series.
UNC (42-20) hosts Arkansas (41-19) in the Super Regionals next, with the best-of-3 series starting at 11 a.m. Saturday (ESPN) and keeping the Tar Heels at home in Boshamer Stadium. The second game of the series is at 1 p.m. Sunday (ESPN or ESPN2), and the third game will be played Monday if necessary.
North Carolina, the No. 10 overall seed in the tournament, is 33-7 at home on the season and has won 19 of its last 22 games.
UNC defeated VCU 7-3 on Monday night in a winner-take-all regional title matchup to advance, the third straight victory for the Tar Heels after dropping to the losers bracket in the Chapel Hill Regional.
It became an eventful ride to the regional crown and the program’s 10th trip to the Super Regional round, including coach Scott Forbes serving a two-game suspension stemming from an ejection in Saturday night’s loss to VCU.
“I’m thankful to have won that regional,” Forbes said Monday night. “But man, to come out of the losers bracket like that is telltale of this team. It doesn’t surprise me. Nothing surprises me with this group anymore, and I’m just thankful to be able to be in it with them.”
Arkansas topped regional host Oklahoma State 7-3 on Monday night to eliminate the Cowboys and reach the Super Regionals. Had Oklahoma State, the No. 7 national seed, beaten Arkansas in that winner-take-all game, North Carolina would’ve been playing on the road at Oklahoma State in the Super Regionals.
