Several Christmas parades and other annual holiday events have been canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but cities throughout Alamance County are planning new events to create Christmas cheer.
Burlington
Though Burlington’s annual Christmas Parade, Christmas in the Park and Downtown Holiday Magic events were canceled due to COVID-19, B-Town Events is still planning two socially distanced holiday happenings.
The D-Town B-Town Reindeer Roundup Scavenger Hunt is going on now through Dec. 20.
Participants must find at least 20 of the reindeer hiding in the windows of downtown Burlington’s businesses. Printable Reindeer Roundup Hunt cards are available from B-Town Events’ website or Facebook page and should be completed and turned in at the labeled mailbox in front of the Historic Depot.
Completed scavenger hunts will be eligible to win holiday goodie bags from B-Town Events.
The B-Town Christmas Cruise-Thru will be held 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12.
Similar to the Halloween Cruise-Thru, participants can drive through a holiday decoration setup, listen to Christmas music and say hello to Santa and Mrs. Claus. Goodie bags will be available for children and will include something to wear, something to eat, something to craft and more.
Participants should enter the cruise-thru from the Kitchin Street staging area where they will be directed by staff to the cruise-thru on Overbrook Drive.
In collaboration with United Way of Alamance County, a donation of one non=perishable item per person is suggested.
Graham
The City of Graham hosted a virtual Christmas Tree Lighting event on Dec. 6, but there are still more holiday events to come.
The downtown ice skating rink will remain open through Dec. 20. Skating and skate rentals are free, but there is a small cost for concessions. To view operating hours, visit www.cityofgraham.com/grpd-special-ice-skating-rink.
Masks are required on and off the ice.
The Graham Recreation and Parks Department is also hosting an online Gingerbread House Decorating contest. All ages are welcome to participate through Dec. 20.
All you need to do is submit a photo of your decorated gingerbread house at forms.gle/nKuWDd9huYyAT3636. Winners, judged on creativity, will receive a holiday gift basket with goodies from throughout Graham.
Winners will be announced on Facebook Live 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21.
Graham is also hosting a scavenger hunt, which will walk participants “through the story of our Elf’s missing candy canes around the City of Graham,” according to event organizers. Eleven candy canes are hidden around Graham along with 11 code words. Participants should collect all 11 code words and submit them online at forms.gle/ZELNwdzaRfvLn4378.
Participants who complete the hunt will be entered to win a raffle for several holiday gift baskets.
Bonus entries are available by posting photos along the hunt with the hashtag #GrahamsGreatCandyCaneQuest on Instagram.
Winners will be announced on Facebook Live 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21.
Several downtown Winter Wonderland & Christmas Town Drive-Thru events are planned throughout December as well. The drive-thru starts at the Graham Police and Fire Department and continues through downtown with pop-up Christmas scenes on Main Street, Court Square and East and West Elm streets.
The drive-thru will be held 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12; 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13; 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19; and, 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20.
Admission is free.
While you’re visiting downtown Graham, be sure to check out the decorated windows of downtown businesses participating in the Downtown Window Decorating Contest hosted by the Graham Area Business Association, Graham Recreation & Parks and Graham’s Downtown Development.
Voting has already closed, but over 30 displays were created.
Mebane
Mebane’s Christmas parade and Winter Wonderland event may have been canceled, but there is still holiday cheer in store.
Residents are encouraged to shop, dine and enjoy downtown Mebane through the end of the It’s Snowing in Mebane event on Dec. 19.
The special event will be set up each 3-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants are encouraged to enter the 12 Stamps of Christmas raffle, stop by the park next to Plant Pure and Dollar General for a holiday photo opportunity and more.
