GRAHAM — Since 1931, women have been gathering at the Eli Whitney Community Center on the first Thursday in April to show their quilts, assist others with finishing quilts and tell their quilt stories at an event that came to be known as Uncle Eli’s Quilting Party.
This year’s event will take on Thursday, April 4, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Eli Whitney Community Center gym, 4110 E. Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, Graham.
There are typically over 40-50 quilts of various ages and art at this free event, which will be followed by a potluck lunch.
The event theme is “Every quilt tells a story.” Maybe it’s been made from scraps of recognizable family clothing, a collection of ties from family generations, T-shirts sewn together to commemorate a budding sports career or aprons to honor family cooks. Some quilts tell their story by the hands that made them; they may be passed down from generations, sometimes losing the details, but never the affection. Some have been made to swaddle new babies in the family. Some are loving works of art. Some quilts become play tents, and their stories are memories of kids playing hide and seek.
All kinds of quilts will be on display, along with a special exhibit that will highlight quilt stories through the various lenses of people’s lives.
The public is welcome to bring and show their quilts, see those on display, enjoy a free exchange of fabrics and quilt magazines and sit at a quilt frame and learn from other quilters.
