BURLINGTON — Yarn manufacturer McMichael Mills plans to close its Burlington plant in April, laying off 81 workers.
The company has decided to consolidate operations at its Mayodan plant, McMichael Mills President Brack Brigman said in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN notice, to the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Division of Workforce Solutions.
Businesses that employ at least 100 full-time workers a WARN notice ahead of mass layoffs. WARN notices trigger the Division of Workforce Solutions to provide transition support for those being laid off.
Many employees were given the opportunity to transfer to Mayodan, and some have chosen to, Brigman’s letter said.
The letter included a broad breakdown of workers affected — four supervisors, 75 full-time hourly workers and four part-time hourly workers, or a total of 83 people. The letter said 81 will be laid off. It did not specify what level of workers had chosen to transfer to Mayodan.
The plant at 2050B Willow Spring Lane will close between April 13 and April 27, the letter said.
