GRAHAM — It is with great sadness that the family of David W. Johnson announces his passing on March 5, 2024. David was born on November 19, 1941 and was the son of D.L. and Margaret (Woody) Johnson of Graham, NC, both deceased. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Eleanor L. Johnson of the home; brother Gary L. Johnson (Jane) of Cary; sons D. Duane Johnson (Mindy) of Winston Salem and Bryan W. Johnson of Gibsonville; grandchildren Mary Chapman Johnson of Nashville, TN, Kathryn (Katie) W. Johnson of Winston Salem, and Mason L. Johnson of Gibsonville.
David loved the profession of being a Certified Public Accountant and served it for over 60 years. He joined the firm of Apple and Bell as an accountant in 1963, becoming a partner in 1974. He retired in 2012 as President of Apple, Bell, Johnson & Company (Gillam, Bell, Moser, LLP) and continued to practice the profession on a part time basis until his passing. He was a member of Allinial Global, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.
He was committed to being active and giving to the community. He served as a member of the Advisory Board / Board of Directors for the following organizations: Burlington Chamber of Commerce, Graham Optimist Club, American Business Club, and Elon University Love School of Business.
In his leisure time, he had a passion for playing and watching sports. He was an avid tennis player playing until his passing with his long-time buddies at Olde Forest Racquet Club, he loved watching UNC Tar Heel basketball, and was active coaching little league baseball for several years.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at 2 p.m. in the Rich & Thompson Chapel located at 207 E. Elm Street, Graham, NC 27253. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Moore’s Chapel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Moore’s Chapel Cemetery. Checks can be made to the Saxapahaw Memorial Association and sent to Dan Cheek, 6734 Whitney Road, Graham, NC 27253.
