The elementary school principal accused of sexually assaulting a student on school property is now formally on the path to being fired, the Alamance-Burlington School System announced Tuesday.
Daniel McInnis, 43, had been suspended with pay since Dec. 11 after being informed of the investigation by the Burlington Police Department, which received a report on Dec. 8 alleging misconduct at Eastlawn Elementary School.
McInnis was arrested Dec. 29 and charged with felony statutory sex offense. Details of the allegations have not been released, but at his first court hearing last week officials said McInnis reportedly took a child out of class during school and sexually assaulted the child.
McInnis now is suspended without pay, the school system announced, and dismissal has been recommended to the Alamance-Burlington Board of Education.
Retired principal Donna King has been named interim principal at Eastlawn Elementary, the announcement said.
“Mrs. King brings extensive experience to the school, having served as an administrator in the District for over 25 years,” it said.
McInnis posted bond last week and is out of jail awaiting trial.
