Following a call for the public’s help investigating vehicle break-ins, the Graham Police Department has issued more information about an increase in car break-ins and thefts since Feb. 7.
There have been 15 vehicles stolen and eight additional attempted thefts, most involving Kia and Hyundai model years 2011 to 2021, police said in a post on social media.
“Shockingly, some of these thefts occurred because vehicles were left unlocked. In other cases, perpetrators have resorted to breaking vehicle glass to gain access. These crimes are predominantly happening in apartment complexes during the nighttime hours,” the post said.
Police see echoes from a trend in 2022 that followed a “challenge” video on the TikTok social media site that demonstrated how to steal certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles using a USB cord.
Both manufacturers made available security updates and other measures to mitigate risks, and police urge Kia and Hyundai owners to contact their local dealerships to explore options.
Graham patrol units have stepped up monitoring in and around apartment complexes to deter further incidents, police said.
Anyone noticing anything suspicious or encountering unfamiliar individuals in your apartment complex or neighborhood should contact police or dial 911 immediately, police said.
Police ask that anyone with information that could aid in identifying the individuals responsible for these recent thefts contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 336-570-6711, Burlington/Graham Communications at (336)229-3500 or Crime Stoppers at (336)229-7100, or utilize the P3 Mobile App at P3TIPS.com.
